Experience an intimate 3-hour journey through the rarely seen countryside of the northern Yucatán near Quinta Kookix. Designed for travelers who appreciate beauty, history, and a sense of place, this refined excursion follows quiet country roads and old caminos blancos, or sacbe, the raised white limestone causeways once used to connect Mayan pueblos. Along the way, we pass historic haciendas where henequen was grown and processed during the 1800s and 1900s. Some stand abandoned, others are being carefully restored, and one remains in use today, each offering a graceful and atmospheric glimpse into the region’s layered past. Photographers, history lovers, nature enthusiasts, and culturally curious travelers will find memorable vistas, intimate local encounters, and a rare sense of access beyond the usual tourist paths. We will pass through several indigenous pueblos, with time to pause for a refreshment along the way. After the ride, we’ll return to Quinta Kookix and continue to the home of local chef Lidia Chale for a traditional Yucatecan homemade lunch, with the menu discussed in advance. Lidia learned to cook from her grandmother and mother, and still works in her mother’s traditional kitchen, preparing many dishes over an open fire or in an underground oven. Thoughtfully paced and deeply rooted in place, this experience offers a polished yet authentic introduction to one of Mexico’s most distinctive and fascinating regions. Note: Henequen, Agave fourcroydes, also known as sisal, is the plant that dominated the economy and politics of the Yucatán for more than a century. Very little is grown commercially today. At Quinta Kookix, we have more than 6,000 henequen plants; they are no longer harvested, just admired.
